Moving Images

The Course

IAT 344 is a moving images course meant to build upon digital video production skills to develop skills in video filming, post-production, and presentation techniques.

The Prompt

We are creating documentary film in collaboration with the Museum of Vancouver for an attempt to be showcased in the 2026 exhibition. We were prompted to develop a short film on the concept of rain.

Our Project

Above the Concrete explores how green roofs help manage stormwater, improve climate/air quality and inspire the future of urban planning.

My Role

I am the camera operator and director of photography. That means I am in charge of setting up the camera and overall composition of all shots to ensure they align with the director and teams overall vision. I ensure that the flow of our documentary is in alignment with our story board as well.

My Process

Something that was integral to my process was always referring back to the teams mood board and overall vision to the entire film. This is to ensure that the shots that I was framing was alluding to the same vibe that we initially set out.

Challenges

While operating the camera, I found that I was replicating some shot compositions (such as panning left to right landscapes) and not getting enough variety in other shot sizes. I learned more about how to film in cloudy, overcast days that may be darker and less exposed.
